A GUIDE TO OUR ‘ALL THE SMALL DOG BREEDS’ WEBSITE

Here at All the Small Dog Breeds, we have put together a breed description for all of the small dog breeds that are formally recognised.

Each breed description is written and designed to give you an accurate, helpful description of the breeds, and how they might be a welcome addition to your life.

They are segmented into 9 sections to be able to easily compare the breeds. These include:

Origins & History: the history of the breeds is quite fascinating to learn how they came to be today as modern versions of historical breeds.

Physical Characteristics: the official description of each breed, what makes them unique, and what would be assessed as ‘standards of the breed’ if they were to be judged in a show.

Size & Weight: whilst there is a lot of variation within a litter, let alone a breed as a whole, there are standard guidelines that can be expected with a purebred dog.

Exercise & Nutrition: while it is safe to assume all small dog breeds will need both quality exercise & nutrition, some small dog breeds might need more structure around feeding time to help overeating, some might thrive with a training style exercise regime, while other small dog breeds are happy with a lap of the dog park to socialize, rather than a big strenuous long walk.

Grooming Requirements: this is important to know before committing to a small dog breed, as some small dogs need regular grooming with their coats, while others are much lower maintenance. The happiness and ease of your life together will depend on being able to ensure their grooming needs are met, as a dog getting dreadlocks through lack of grooming is not fair on them at all. The other big question everyone wants to know about is how best to manage allergies, and which dogs might be more hypoallergenic than others, so that even families with asthma sufferers can still enjoy the benefits of having a small dog in the family.

Trainability & Intelligence: while these are not mutually exclusive, knowing how your dog learns and responds to training can save you both a lot of unnecessary stress and exertion. If you have a dream of winning all the dog agility ribbons with your Fido, then read up on which breed might be best suited to going all the way with you!

Living Conditions & Adaptability: not all small dog breeds need an acreage for their exercise, whilst on the same hand, not all dogs are suited to life in a highrise apartment, so knowing their needs can save you both from unnecessary barking complaints from your neighbors

Health & Life Expectancy: we all hope to have our dogs be healthy, happy and live a very long time. Knowing what things they might be susceptible to later in life, we can do our best to prevent it from happening. Dogs prone to back issues, like Dachshunds or Corgis, we can do our best to protect them by using a ramp wherever possible. Supplementing their diet, and being informed with what to ask your Vet can ensure you have your beloved small dog for as long as possible.
